  • Special(ity) December: Coffee Advent Calendars & Nagare+Stopover

Advent calendars have been a thing since forever, and coffee is no exception! Who doesn’t enjoy the opportunity of making the December season a bit more special to further highlight the festive atmosphere, since otherwise it’s cold and all. And starting every day of the month until Christmas with a new surprise coffee is certainly exciting. To my fellow popular neuroscience fans out there - ha-ha, dopamine stacking!.

For this year, I’ve chosen to go with the calendar sold by Nagare Coffee - a great Japanese style little cafe in the City of London which opened earlier this year and immediately became popular amongst London coffee snobs and beyond. For the 2023 advent calendar, they had a collaboration with the Taiwanese speciality roaster called Coffee Stopover.

Here’s my experience with them, and a few general thoughts. Also, Happy New Year!

  • Japan: Speciality Coffee Thoughts

Japan is such an amazing and unique country. Yes, I know, everyone who’s ever been there says the same thing, and you’ve probably heard it a million times before, so I’ll spare you the introduction. Seriously though, you can’t possibly have a bad time there - even without a sophisticated itinerary and after not spending days of cherry-picking /r/JapanTravel, you’re going to have a trip of a lifetime.

Especially, if you are into coffee, and especially if the coffee you are into is so special that some people call it speciality. That, my special friends, is what I would like to chat to you about. In particular - what was it like to be the coffee nerd who needs to ingest snob quality caffeine every couple hours, while enjoying the marvellous scenery.

As a bonus, in the end I’m including some of the great speciality coffee places me and my wife visited while we were in Tokyo and Kyoto. Well, and a bit of Nagoya, since it’s close to Suzuka - wife’s a Formula 1 fan, fast cars go brrrr. By the way, here’s my another post about one of those special places.

  • Koffee Mameya in Tokyo, Japan

During my Japan trip, I’ve had a chance to visit the legendary Koffee Mameya, and I’m excited to share my experience! It’s located in Omotesando region of Tokyo — overall a dream area for a coffee nerd, where you can see yet another specialty coffee place every minute you keep on discovering its surroundings.

  • Costa Rica cupping at Square Mile

Had an incredible time visiting the Square Mile Coffee roastery in London, for the Celebrating Costa Rica Cupping!

  • Niche Zero: From Zero to Hero

Okay, that title was clickbaity. But this is my very first post here, so let’s just let this one slide, shall we?

This post is a practical summary of Niche Zero facts and tips – based on my 1.5 years of using it both for espresso and filter, and learning/chatting about it on the internets. This grinder has been discussed a lot for the last couple years, but I haven’t yet seen all of these Niche-specific tips written in a single place.
